And so it continues: Electric Island 2014

So it continues: Electric Island 2014

By M.P. Krugmann

There is something wonderful about getting a crowd of people together who all share the same desire: the desire to escape. Electric Island offers Toronto’s EDM (Electronic Dance Music) fans exactly that. Unlike Digital Dreams and Veld, Electric Island is the most laid back EDM event that one can attend in Toronto. It’s kind of like going to a friend’s backyard barbeque that just happens to have curious circus inspired characters spread all over the place; people wearing body paint, jugglers, acrobats, and dancers are just the tip of the ice burg, because, after all, the music is the best part of the day.

On August 4th, 2014, Electric Island fans were given the chance to dance their civic holiday away to the mixes of Bob Moses, Seth Troxler, Maya Jane Coles, My Favourite Robot and more. If that line up wasn’t enough, Toronto’s 2014 mayoral candidate, Olivia Chow, made a guest appearance and publicly announced her support for Toronto’s rave community and their love to party. Before introducing Bob Moses, the hopeful candidate boldly stated that Toronto could take over Berlin as the EDM capital of the word. She might be right… Electric Island opened its doors in the summer of 2013 and has since taken Toronto by storm. Every show (they have four per summer) has seen the number of partygoers steadily rise.

I can safely say, after experiencing my first Electric Island event this summer, I’ll definitely be attending the finale one come September 1st. There was just something magical about looking over a dancing crowd, towards the Toronto skyline as the sunset in the distance. It was a vision as well as much needed escape from the constant hustle that is living in this vibrant city.
